Traderjoedex: when to adjust slippage tolerance
On LFJ, the decentralized exchange formerly called Trader Joe, widen slippage tolerance only when the larger permitted change between quote and execution is acceptable. With a fixed input and an unchanged quote, a higher tolerance permits a lower minimum output. The setting does not reduce the price impact that the trade itself causes.
Distinguish price impact from slippage
- Price impact
- The price movement caused by the trade itself as it consumes available pool liquidity.
- Slippage
- The difference between the quoted result and the result at execution. Market volatility or limited liquidity can cause that difference.
Liquidity Book executes at a fixed price within each bin. Once the available output liquidity in a bin is consumed, a swap with input left to exchange continues into the next available bin at its price. A trade that crosses bins can therefore have price impact even though execution within a single bin has a fixed rate. LFJ announced that Liquidity Book on Monad is shifting to withdrawal-only mode while its separate POE PropAMM remains operational there.
The transaction limit depends on the swap type. Exact-input router calls specify a minimum output. In an exact-output call with a token input,
amountInMax
instead limits how much input may be spent to obtain the requested output.
When a wider tolerance can help
During market volatility, the price can move beyond a tight tolerance between quotation and execution. A wider setting permits a larger unfavorable change before the swap reverts. For an exact-input swap, review the permitted minimum output before widening the setting.
Some transfer-tax tokens need a larger slippage allowance because their transfer rules affect the swap. The required allowance depends on the token's tax implementation. The chosen swap method must also support the token's transfer rules. Increasing tolerance does not remove that tax or the swap fee.
A quote that already shows high price impact calls for reviewing the trade size and available liquidity. Compare the quoted impact for a smaller input or another available route before accepting a wider limit. Changing tolerance leaves the pool's liquidity unchanged.
Safe Mode has a separate price-impact limit
LFJ's Price Impact, Slippage and Safe Mode guide describes an interface guard that blocks swaps with price impact over 5% while Safe Mode is enabled. Increasing slippage tolerance does not disable that guard. Turning Safe Mode off removes that interface block. The trade's price impact and the transaction's input or output limit still apply.
Where the minimum output applies
For exact-input Liquidity Book router functions that specify
amountOutMin
, this parameter sets the
minimum output
checked by the selected method. In the documented V2.2 router, standard token-output methods check the nominal output, so an output transfer tax can leave the recipient below that minimum. The fee-on-transfer token-output variants instead check the recipient's balance increase. The transaction can execute below the quoted output while still meeting that minimum.
| Stage | Amount or state | Role in the swap | Limit or result |
|---|---|---|---|
| Quote | Expected output for the chosen input | Provides the reference for choosing an acceptable output limit. | Pool state can change before execution. |
| Set the output limit |
amountOutMin
|
Sets the minimum output checked by that exact-input router method. | A wider tolerance permits a lower floor for the same quote. |
| Pool execution | Available liquidity and pool state at execution | Determine the output produced by the swap. | The executed result can differ from the earlier quote. |
| Router check | Output measured by the selected router method compared with the specified minimum | Enforces minimum-output protection. | A measured output below the limit causes the transaction to revert. |
| Final result | Successful swap or reverted transaction | A successful swap applies the token exchange; a revert undoes the swap's token changes. | A reverted transaction can still consume gas. |
